The U14/U15 Gladys Chitty XI lost the opening fixture of the season by 1 run on a chilly night at Headley. Batting first Effingham totalled 115 for 8 off the allotted 20 overs with Theo Jones top scoring with 28. Peter Wing [3 overs, 1 for 4], Alex Jepp [3 overs, 1 for 8] and Jason Cook [2 overs 1 for 7] were the pick of the bowlers supported by some fine catches in the outfield.
In reply, Ashtead posted 24 before the loss of the first wicket and with Sam Hunt making 24 they were always in the chase. Alex Jepp batted well in the middle order but his retirement on 33 added pressure on the late order. With 6 required off the last over the game was there for the taking. Two to win off the last ball proved out of reach as the wicket was lost and the game went to Effingham by a single run. A great close game to start the season, played in good spirit and enjoyed by all despite the cold!
