Leatherhead won the toss and put Ashtead in to bat in this 20 over Mid Surrey League fixture at Headley. Ashtead scored 105 for 6 and Leatherhead scored 54 all out in reply. Leatherhead had an impressive bowling line up restricting most of our higher order batsmen to single figures. Sam Conlan, batting at number 5 top scored with 25 not out and the run rate accelerated with Ishan Nathan coming to the crease and scoring 17 off 8 balls to help push the score towards 105, a good total on pitch that can be difficult to score on. The match had a great derby atmosphere with plenty of friendly and enthusiastic banter. Ashtead’s ‘hokey-cokey’ warm up at the start of the 2nd innings amused the home supporters, demonstrating the fun spirit within the team and was nearly as intimidating as a New Zealand, All Blacks rugby haka?
Ashtead’s bowling and fielding effectively won the game. Opener Ned Hussey bossed his 3 overs, taking 2 wickets for 4 runs in 3 overs. Charlie Miers took 2 wickets for 3 runs, Sam Conlan 2 wickets for 9, Aidan Bennett 1 wicket for 4, Dan Geddes 1 for 12 and Josh Lyons 1 for 6. Ambar Vishnoi bowled an excellent 2 maidens and was unlucky not to grab a wicket. Only 3 extras were given away during the innings – our best bowling figures for a while. Our fielding was on top form with the boys chasing down what looked like certain 4’s with diving stops on the boundary by Jake Bartholomew, a direct hit run out by Charlie Miers, powerful stops by Dan Geddes fielding close in and a spectacular one handed catch by Josh Lyons. Daniel Fisher was imposing behind the stumps with some great diving stops. Captain Kishan Patel managed the match well and gave everyone a bowl. Man of the match was Sam Conlan.
Thank you to all the parents who helped out and for getting the boys there for a 6.15pm start.
