Playing our first evening home match of the season at Headley CC, the team produced a controlled performance that yielded a convincing win in the Mid Surrey Colts League against Chessington CC by 6 wickets. Winning the toss, the Visitors elected to bat, but a spell of tight bowling and 2 early wickets from the opening bowlers Oliver C and Michael S restricted the scoring rate. This control was maintained throughout the innings, supported by some excellent fielding, including a run out by Taiga H of their most dangerous batsman, who made a fine 27 whilst holding the Chessington innings together. Towards the close of the innings, the run rate was kept to less than 5 an over which was a great effort from the whole team.
Set a target of 90 for victory, a watchful start was made on a deteriorating pitch, with good shot selection whilst still punishing the wayward deliveries, advancing the score well above the required run rate. Chessington responded with a dogged display and gave the batsman a thorough examination, with minimal extras conceded and what may have been the boys first exposure to genuine spin bowling. Their accuracy maintained the contest throughout the innings and whilst they continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals, their total proved to be to small to defend, with the winning runs provided from a fine stroke for 4 by top scorer Olli M in the 16th over.
This was another great performance from the team, showing a great spirit and illustrates the depth of talent in the squad - well done, keep up the good work boys! Our thanks also go to the ground staff at Headley CC who allowed the game to proceed despite the earlier rain and a lot of moisture in the wicket.
