The weather could not have been better for the first GCL match of the season for the U12 B team. A bright sunny day, a good turnout of parents, setting the scene for a stunning victory.
Ashtead, captained by Callum Thorogood, won the toss and elected to send the opposition in to bat first. The boys put in a truly fine fielding performance. Special mention for Toby Rackett who took two fine catches, one quite spectacularly. There was also a fabulous run out. Wickets were taken through the bowling of Amar Mir (1), Josh Bates (1), Luke Pisa (1), Jack Goodin (3) and Callum Thorogood (1). So congratulations to Jack for most wickets. There were a couple of dropped catches and mis-fields that cost the team some wickets and runs - and the boys know they need to work on these aspects further. But all in all a very good start to the season from a fielding perspective.
This gave Ashtead a target of 94 runs to win. I think it's fair to say that we had a slow start and it was short of what the team is capable of in terms of batting. We were very fortunate that Teddington gave away a high number of extras, so not sure of precise extras total). In particular, there were at least a couple of run outs which were unnecessary, as well as some overly cautious waiting where runs could have been picked up. Running between the wickets will be an area for training nights. Nonetheless, I am extremely proud of the boys for battling on and picking up the pace towards the end. Leo Martin deserves special mention for his gutsy 4 on the 4th ball of the final over to secure victory - especially as it was only the 2nd ball he faced! Jack Goodin, Callum Thorogood, Luke Pisa and Amar Mir delivered the standout run totals.
Thanks to Sara Pittman for organising the match and helpers and to all who pitched in with setup, refreshments, BBQ and clear up. Thanks to Emma Rackett for scoring - she has not done so for 'proper cricket' previously so was brave to 'volunteer' - delighted she is happy to do it again.
