ASHTEAD U12A V BARNES
MSL CUP 31ST MAY 2015
Having been knocked out of the West Surrey Cup at the first hurdle this match was a chance to stake a claim for some alternative silverware.
On a morning when the weather wasn't kind the match was in doubt but at 8.09am it was decided to go ahead on an Astro strip. Ashtead parents got hastily dressed and headed into London. Ashtead won the toss and elected to bowl thinking the rain had abated until maybe after the match would have finished......wrong!!
Bowling
The opening combination of Graham and Jenkins was solid without yielding wickets often in windswept driving rain. Spectators were wondering whether the match would be abandoned but play continued and it was hard ...and cold for the fielders (and umpire) ...some not having brought anything but short sleeved tops! Crossan, Mason, Bunyard and Perkins continued the attack and finally with 46 runs on the board a wicket was taken by Crossan. Another wicket for Crossan, a very good run out by Thorogood and some very tight bowling, especially at the death and a wicket for Perkins.
Barnes reached a very credible total of 125 for 4 after 20 Overs.
Batting
After some half time words of wisdom and encouragement from Bunyard (Senior) Ashtead went into bat with purpose.
Graham and Goodin formed the opening partnership once again. Graham reached 36 retired not out having batted serenely and Goodin once again played a very solid opening batsman role scoring 11 runs and rotating the strike expertly. Hutter batting at 3 put on 25 not out and with almost 7.5 runs an over required late in the game Coldicott (who selflessly was run out), Crossan and Fraser-Ker blasted Ashtead into the next round with 6 balls to spare and the loss of 3 wickets.
Ashtead U12A won by 8 Wickets.
Many thanks to Archie Coldicott and Callum Thorogood for answering last minute requests to play and who both contributed and made a difference.
Goodin Senior with usual words of wisdom (?) did suggest that 'i think their batting runs deep' early on in the Barnes innings and for once he wasn't too far wrong...but then so does ours!!
Many thanks to Crossan (Brendan) for scoring and the parents who stayed to support on day when being inside could easily have seemed more preferable option.
