Dead Rubber As Places Already Maintained

It was a bit of an end of term feel to the game as both Ashtead and Purley had nothing to gain or lose going into the day. All were relaxed and the weather was half decent.

A green deck meant the skipper had only one job and call correctly.... he didn't and after what felt like a long decision making process the Purley skipper decided to have a bowl (he genuinely had fear on his face when he knew he had to make the call on bat or bowl).

As the usual opening pair of Ben Gale and Gareth Amer walked out to open the innings they did so facing a team that included the best and third best bowlers in the leagueof which one was fast opening bowler Mulana Umer. Within two balls it was clear that batting was going to be tough against Umer as he caused problems immediately. One genuine edge and an opened face gave Ben Gale two quick fours but another fuller ball unfortunately did for Ben as he went for 9. Sam Conlan came out to join Amer and tried to settle in as instructed by his captain. At the other end anything that gave width or was slightly short of the days full length was put away with a few back foot searing cuts through the covers.

Umer was still bowling well and after hitting Amer on the foot he finally got one to sneak through to bowl Gareth Amer who went for 29.

What followed after was a series of quick wickets as the middle order came after Sam Conlan unfortunately ran himself out and went as 41-1 quickly became 59-7. 49 runs from Brendan Crossan (11), Matt Browne (19) and Dominic Lloyd (19) really helped push the score. Both Browne and Lloyd held nothing back hitting boundaries whenever possible and Lloyd hitting a six just after coming to the crease. As the last wicket fell we scrapped to 106 leaving behind 15 unused overs and being at least 50/60 runs short of a par score.

From the start it was clear Purley captain for the day Mark Doherty planned to let people bat around him as he took his time whilst his players could play free at the other end. It was one of those days where it was not meant to be and yet again the unluckiest bowler in the club Dominic Lloyd had at least five chances not taken or given. Steve Scola given a chance to bat up the order for Purley took advantage of the end of season chance taking 43 from 45 balls. After he went James Hunt batted sensibly and left it to Mark Doherty to finish on 32 runs to finish off the season. Dominic Lloyd finished on 1-27 and Gyan Vishnoi was the only other bowler to claim a wicket, a brilliant caught and bowled, as he finished on 1-23.

It was a tough day on the park for the 4th XI but all things considered our main aim of staying in Division 1 was achieved. A lot junior players were blooded into the team this year. Definitely something to build on for 2019.
