Winning the toss, Ashtead asked Walton to bat which was immediately vindicated as Burgess trapped the captain and opener right in front for a simple LBW on the second bal of the game. Soon afterwards Burgess had the no3 caught at slip by Tom Culhane. Wickets fell at regular occasions but it was the batting of McDonagh who had just come down from their 2nd XI who allowed Walton to post a respectable 204-9 as they declared in the 52.5 over. Wickets were taken by Burgess 3-39, Will Culhane 3-44, Martin 2-22 and Elburn 1-32. If Ashtead had only taken their chances the score would have been much lower as several catches were dropped.

Ashtead had 48 overs to reach their target but only really managed small partnerships. Bradshaw (48) and Martin (34) were the notable scores with the rest of the top order making starts but not being able to convert. But it was the swing of De Jesus who halted any chance of a charge towards the target for a winning draw as he finished on 5-25 clean bowling the last wicket in the 47th over.

Ashtead finished 6 runs short of the winning draw target but more importantly couldn't hang out to see out for the draw as Walton secured the 24 points now offered for a win.

A well fought game in good spirits, with some good cricket played, but a lack of runs and some dropped catches caused Ashtead to lose this one.

A better performance is needed against Guildford next week.
