An undefeated half-century from Sam Hunt proved to be the match winner as the U14s defeated last years champions Spencer. After winning the toss and opting the field, Ashtead made the early breakthrough as Jason Cook ran out opener Loynes. That brought district player Lucas Wilson to the crease, who upped the tempo striking 3 boundaries in quick succession. The decisive wicket was taken by spinner Riley Jarrold, as Wilson skied a catch to Charlie Sidwell, who took the vital catch. With the bowlers sharing the wickets, the innings never really gained any momentum, with only Harrison [21] and Young [20] making any score of note. The innings closed on 116 for 7 off the allotted 24 overs.
In reply, Sam Hunt and Charlie Sidwell [12] got Ashtead off to a flying start, reaching 40 off the first 5 overs. But after Sidwell fell, and Lowry was run out second ball, Spencer forced their way back into the game. At 66 for 4, the game was in the balance, but Jason Cook [15] joined Hunt in a stand of 24, to put Ashtead in the driving seat. Hunt completed his 50 and retired with only 10 required to win, and Riley Jarrold and Harry Plumb reached the target with almost 3 overs remaining. A good win for the boys, but still room for improvement.
