After two loses, the 3s took on Sunbury at Box Hill on a damp Saturday. The captains reduced the game to 40 overs each with the looming weather and Sunbury won the toss and batted.
Yet again, the opening pair got off to a quick start with some lusty blows, scoring at over 6 runs an over but the first wicket went to Barney Cowie (2-47) after a couple of dropped chances. The 2nd wicket fell at 76-2 to Connor Caprano-Wint clean bowling their no3, then the introduction of veteran seam bowler David Whiteley (2-20) and Rob Wint (1-26) that slowed the scoring down as the drizzle started to fall.
The return of Caprano-Wint helped mop up the tail as he finished the pick of the bowling for 4-35, and a run out from Parkinson on the very last ball meant Sunbury were all out for 173 off their 40 overs. A good team performance, but with a few too many missed chances though.
In reply, having lost Biggs (22), Roberts, Culhane (31) and then Wint, Ashtead found themselves 68-4 and struggling against a determined Sunbury side who braved the wet weather.
But the match winning partnership came from Jack Parkinson (59*) and Caprano-Wint (40*) as they remained together as Jack hit the winning runs to secure the 20 points and the sides first.
