The Stags were left to rue their decision to bat first on a soft and damp wicket, slumping to 12 for 4 in the opening stages of the match. But for a true captain's knock from John Vaughan-Davies, things could have been much worse for the home side.
Vaughan-Davies led a patient fight-back against Valley End's consistent bowling attack, with very able support from Fred Davies. Indeed, at the halfway mark in the innings it looked like Ashtead might salvage a competitive total.
Those hopes took a blow when Davies perished for 27 and Conor Young fell soon afterwards. First-round hero Lammiman then rode his luck, surviving a couple of chances whilst hammering 40 from 34 balls to lift Ashtead beyond the 150 mark.
Meanwhile Vaughan-Davies continued to anchor the innings, eventually top-scoring with 69 runs as the Stags reached 166 for 9 from their allotted overs.
Ashtead started its defence well by effecting an early run out. However, the pitch had undoubtedly flattened out and the home bowlers struggled to replicate Valley End's feats with the new ball. That proved the difference, with Valley End's Newberry, MacDougal, Nevin and Redwood building vital partnerships in the top six.
Stewart Cameron (2/22 off 10) and Tom Deighton (0/24 off 10) were particularly accurate and miserly, but ultimately the Stags never gained ascendancy and Valley End timed their chase well for a deserved win.
This Saturday Ashtead travel to Beddington.
