Two weeks of wet. Despite getting the game on in the mid-week T20 vs Beddington last Thursday, Ashtead were unfortunately rained out against league leaders Reigate Priory in Round 9 of the 2016 Surrey Championship Premier League.
Having won the toss, and elected to field, the host’s opening bowlers, Jordan Thomas and Matt Friedlander, were immediately in the wickets as the visitors found going tough in the early overs. The wickets of Richard Oliver, Fraser MacDonald and Andrew Delmont all fell quickly, and with Regiate 21-3, the hosts were in the game.
A partnership of 38 then developed between Chris Murtagh and Ben Shoare, and with a sharp six off Tom Deighton, drinks were called for. At this point, the rain came down. The English summer looked like monsoon weather, and with standing water across most of the ground, the only sensible decision was made.
Next week sees Ashtead host Sunbury – hopefully. The following week will see the quarter-final of the Edwards Cup at Reigate Priory, after Ashtead pulled off a comprehensive 8 wicket win over Beddington last Thursday. Join us again for these matches.
