First round of the National Cup sees Ashtead win through

ASHTEAD V RICHMOND (ECB National Cup)

Richmond139 all out in 43 overs
Ashtead140 for 6 in 44.1 overs
Result Ashtead won by 4 wkts

A bitterly cold day saw Ashtead take the honours in this closely fought 45 over encounter at Woodfield Lane.

Put in on a slow, early season wicket, the Richmond opening pair struggled to get the ball away against some tight Ashtead bowling. James and Cameron soon had Richmond in trouble with early breakthroughs reducing the visitors to 18 for 3. A brilliant catch and then a run-out added to Richmond's woes and had them reeling at 25 for 5. Solid defence and judicious stroke play then became the order of the day. Indeed against tight bowling by Tom Homes, who bowled his 9 overs for only 17 runs, that was all that was available. However, with anything over about 130 looking like a defendable target, when the score started to edge north of 60, without the fall of a wicket, it was Ashtead's turn to become nervous.

James provided the necessary breakthrough and when he was replaced by Fred Davies, the momentum began to swing back to Ashtead. Davies bowled his overs for only 18 runs and picked up two valuable wickets. Richmond unfortunately were to commit the cardinal sin in this form of cricket, specifically not to use all their alloted overs. Vaughan-Davies, closing their innings with a run-out in the 43rd over.

Still, 139 was most definitely a defendable score, all the more so when Sandersons mistimed drive in the first over was caught at mid-off. It was left to Lammiman and Davies to get the innings off to a start, no easy feat against a fired up Richmond side, supporting two very accurate seamers. Gradually, with good stroke play and a good dose of luck, the innings gathered pace. At the drinks break the score had reached 60, with both batsmen looking comfortable. However, a change of pace brought about the breakthrough Richmond had been looking for with Lammiman paddling a sweep to short backward leg for an easy catch.

Lammiman's 27 was a decent knock in the circumstances, setting up a good platform for Cameron and Davies. These two played exremely well, Cameron even managing a straight 6, before Davies holed out to the square leg boundary for a well made 38. Davie's innings was most definitely a fine one, his 38 being worth considerably more than that. He and Cameron appeared to have the innings completely under control, but when Cameron fell soon after, the picture soon began to change. Pickering and Vaughan-Davies soon followed and suddenly Ashtead found themselves at 118 for 6.

Cope and Dunn set about steadying the ship and with extra's also making a valuable contribution, the score edged its way towards 120. A powerful clip through the onside for 4, against an offside field, eased the pressure and Ashtead found themselves going into the final over with only 1 run needed. With the field drawn in, Cope endeavoured to go for glory and hit over the top. HIs mistimed drive looped upto mid-off, but in the gloom and cold the catch went down and Ashtead scrambled a single, to get them through to the next round and the powerful Wimbledon side.
